Emyezweni March 2012

March 2012

Our first term has whizzed by and children and teachers are busy writing reports and end of term assessment tasks. We have a two week break starting on the 23rd March and everyone is looking forward to some time to recharge their batteries and make the most of the last bit of our glorious Cape summer.
We have had our fair share of domestic crisis, including one morning when the front door of the school wouldn’t open and we were all left on the step waiting for one of our neighbours to help us break in and one day when none of the toilets worked for several hours. Fortunately on both occasions our lovely DIY man Doug came to the rescue and order was restored as quickly as possible. Our building continues to be a challenge for us as it is old and constantly in need of repair and upkeep.

Staff and Volunteers:

Katie and Sheila have settled in brilliantly, it feels as if they have always been around and are valued by staff and children alike. One of our Grade One children has invented a song which starts “Katie, Katie Lovely Katie….. Which we are considering releasing as a fundraiser!
We have hosted two volunteers from Travel work SA this term, Jara and Felicica have been a real help in all the classes and they have just left us to return to their homes in Germany.

 Clubs:

Our Toddler Group has been going well and we are busy planning some new strategies to target the children who will enter school in January 2013. The numbers fluctuate each week and we are keen to really build relationship and skills with a focussed group of families.
Homework Club is also proving to meet a real need in our community and we are hoping to get some texts books to help the children research topics more independently.

Grade Three:

The Grade Three children had a lovely outing this term with a group of thirty young French students who were over here on a school exchange programme. We went to Strand beach for the morning and it was a real joy to see both the students and our children enjoying each other and the sand and sea.

Grade R Outing:

Thanks to the generosity of our Ukuthasa Sponsors the Grade R Class had a great day visiting the Helderberg Nature Reserve last week. They followed picture clues around the reserve finding the tortoise and it’s baby, many plants and different viewpoints. Everyone sat down to a good picnic lunch and then played games with our helpers until it was time to go home. Thanks Ukuthasa and our Special People!

Please pray for us that we will grab God given opportunities to grow and develop our children in every possible way.
